mwbaBrodiaeoideae mwbqTraub, 1972 è una mwbwsottofamiglia di mwcapiante mwcqfloreali mwcgmonocotiledoni della mwcwfamiglia mwdaAsparagaceae. In passato le Brodiaeoideae sono state trattate come una famiglia separata, le mwdqThemidaceaecite-ref-crf2009-1-0[1].

Il nome della sottofamiglia deriva dal genere tipo mwewBrodiaea.

Descrizione

Le piante della sottofamiglia sono mwgapiante perenni erbacee che germinano da un mwgqtubero ricco di mwggamido; ogni anno dal vecchio tubero se ne sviluppa uno nuovo.cite-ref-rahn1998-2-0[2]cite-ref-takhtajan2009-3-0[3]

Le mwjafoglie sono lineari, spesso carnose, e formano una guaina chiusa alla loro base. Le venature sono parallele.

L'mwjginfiorescenza è costituita da un'mwjwombrella o raramente da un singolo fiore, all'apice di uno stelo solitario. I mwkafiori sono bisessuali e mwkqattinomorfi. I mwkgtepali sono tutti simili, in 2 mwkwverticilli di 3.

Gli mwlqstami fertili sono 6, o 3 alternati a 3 staminoidi. Stami e staminoidi si inseriscono sui tepali.

Le mwlwantere sono mwmabasifisse, cioè fissate al filamento alla base, e sono mwmqintrorse, cioè il mwmgpolline è rilasciato verso l'interno.

L'mwnaovario è superiore e triloculare.

Il mwngfrutto è una mwnwcapsula loculicidale. Il mwoaseme è ricoperto da mwoqfitomelanina.

Distribuzione e habitat

Le Brodiaeoideae sono piante native dell'mwpaAmerica centrale e della parte occidentale dell'mwpqAmerica Settentrionale, dalla mwpgColumbia Britannica fino al mwpwGuatemalacite-ref-seberg2007-4-0[4].

Tassonomia

Per la maggior parte dei secoli XIX e XX, sin da quando il mwrgtaxon è stato riconosciuto, esso era considerato al rango di mwrwtribù ed era solitamente denominato Brodiaeeae. La maggior parte degli autori lo assegnava alle mwsaLiliaceae, alle mwsqAlliaceae o alle mwsgAmaryllidaceae.

Nel 1985, Dahlgren, Clifford e Yeo lo trattavano come tribù Brodiaeeae delle Alliaceaecite-ref-dahlgren1985-5-0[5].

Verso la fine del XX secolo, iniziò ad essere evidente che le eterogenee Liliaceae riconosciute da parecchi autori erano più volte mwugpolifiletiche e che il taxon mwuwBrodiaea e i suoi parenti erano più prossimi al genere mwvamwvqAsparagus piuttosto che allmwvg'mwvwmwwaAllium o allmwwq'mwwgmwwwAmaryllis. Per queste ragioni, in un articolo pubblicato nel 1996 su mwxamwxqTaxon fu riesumata la famiglia Themidaceaecite-ref-fay1996-6-0[6].

Il nome Themidaceae fu utilizzato per la prima volta da Richard Salisbury nel 1866cite-ref-salisbury1866-7-0[7]. Il nome si rifaceva al genere ora non riconosciuto mwaaThemis, che fu assegnato da Salisbury assieme a quello della famiglia. La sola specie mai assegnata al genere mwaqThemis era mwagThemis ixioides. Il suo nome fu cambiato in mwawBrodiaea ixioides da mwbaSereno Watson nel 1879cite-ref-watson1879-8-0[8], quindi in mwcqTriteleia ixioides da Edward Lee Greene nel 1886cite-ref-greene1886-9-0[9]. La pianta è tuttora nota come mwdwTriteleia ixioides nella mweqmwegFlora of North America.

Quando nel 2003 l'mwfaAngiosperm Phylogeny Group pubblicò il mwfqsistema APG II, la famiglia Themidaceae fu trattata come una circoscrizione opzionale da quelli che ritenevano che le mwfgAsparagaceae in mwfwsensu lato dovessero essere suddivise in famiglie segregate più piccole. Quando nel 2009 fu pubblicato il mwgasistema APG III, il nome Themidaceae non fu accettato. In un articolo associato alla pubblicazione, il taxon fu trattato come Brodiaeoideae, uno delle 7 sottofamiglie delle Asparagaceaecite-ref-crf2009-1-1[1].

Nelle analisi di mwhgfilogenesi molecolare, la monofilia delle Brodiaeoideae è fortemente supportata. Probabilmente è un gruppo fratello delle mwhwScilloideaecite-ref-pires2006-10-0[10].
